What is a Master Cylinder?

Whether operated by your right hand or your right foot, this converts mechanical force into hydraulic pressure via a lever acting on a piston that presses on a fluid. The force with which you pull the lever, the lever’s leverage ratio, and the size of the master-cylinder piston determine the amount of pressure imparted on the system.

Master cylinders are hydraulic pumps that push brake fluid through the brake lines to the brake calipers to stop your bike. They convert the pressure on the brake lever to the hydraulic pressure.  They are a very important part to the brake systems stopping power, and they can look pretty cool on your handlebars if done right.

Brake lines are multilayer hoses that transmit pressure from the master cylinder to the calipers and typically use a Teflon inner lining surrounded by a nylon, Kevlar, or stainless-steel layer that's then wrapped in another protective material.  The strong the hoses, the better, since any expansion of pressure will reduce your stopping power.

What is a Master Cylinder cover?

Master Cylinder reservoir holds your brake fluid, one for the front brake, one for the rear brake.  The Master Cylinder cover has a tiny hole to allow for fluid to fluctuate without causing pressure, and it is important to keep this cap sealed to ensure that dust or moisture won't seep in and contaminate the fluid.  These covers can be replaced when damaged or just to add a certain style to your ride.

How to replace your Master Cylinder cover?

Most master cylinder covers will simply screw on and off with a Phillips Head screwdriver.  There is a stock gasket that sits between the master cylinder cover and the master cylinder housing.  It may be smart to add some Loctite when installing your new Master Cylinder cover to help ensure the screws don't loosen up.
